Sheridan sought well above average $2,700 a month for rental property

Gareth Sheridan is renting out a two-bedroom US investment property he advertised this year for $2,700 a month – well above its area’s average rent – despite his claims that addressing the housing crisis is a “top, top priority”.

He also claimed he would “hold the Dáil to account over housing failures”.

Presidential hopeful Sheridan, his wife and father-in-law bought the two-bedroom Salt Lake City house in 2020. The following year his father-in-law’s name was removed from ownership records.

In 2022 Sheridan and his wife transferred ownership of the property to Walker Lane Holdings, a business entity registered in Utah and controlled by Sheridan. Around the same time, the couple transferred their family home, also in Salt Lake City, to the same corporation.

The detached two-bedroom house was advertised to rent for $2,700 (€2,300) on 30 January this year. The listing was removed two weeks later after the property had been let agreed.

The average monthly rent for a two-bedroom unit in the neighbourhood is $2,195 (€1,875), according to US rental website HotPads. A recent report suggests houses in Salt Lake City have a median rent of $1,595 (€1,365) per month.

A study published in June this year found that Salt Lake City was among the top five US cities with the worst housing crises.

Sheridan says the housing crisis in Ireland would be one of his top priorities if elected president of Ireland.

“We have housing as a top, top priority… particularly tackling it for the younger generations,” he said in a video posted yesterday on TikTok

Sheridan has been contacted for comment.
