Civil servant at Jim O’Callaghan’s department reportedly admits passing staff data to spy agency

The Ditch has learnt that a civil servant at Jim O’Callaghan’s Department of Justice has admitted to passing confidential staff data to a foreign intelligence agency.

The Russian civil servant is suspected of photographing and sharing data from the department’s personnel files.

It is understood that the Department of Justice employee was allegedly paid to supply data, including images and videos, to a Russian intelligence agency.

The state became aware of the allegations last month and a probe is at an advanced stage.

The Ditch understands that the civil servant is originally from a region illegally occupied by Russia.

Fianna Fáil justice minister Jim O’Callaghan has been contacted for comment.
