Housing tsar, NAMA chief used two aliases in property dealings

NAMA chief Brendan McDonagh – set to become government’s housing tsar – registered ownership of his home using the alias “PB McDonnacha” despite taking out a mortgage on the same property in his own name.

He later made several applications for planning permission using the name “Padraig McDonnacha” while simultaneously owning another property in his usual name.

McDonagh re-registered the north Dublin property in his own name eight years after its purchase.

Brendan, PB, Padraig

Brendan McDonagh bought his Cabra home in September 2014, according to the Property Price Register.

A Permanent TSB mortgage was registered under his name on the property the same month, according to the Land Registry.

In June 2015 the property’s folio was registered under the name “PB McDonnacha”.

Five minor planning permission applications for the property were submitted between January 2015 and July 2020 in the name of “Padraig McDonnacha”, according to Dublin City Council’s records.

The property was later re-registered in the name of “Brendan McDonagh” and a woman co-owner with the same surname in February 2023.

McDonagh was the registered co-owner of another property in Castleknock, north Dublin from 2005, along with a different woman, SM (anonymised for privacy reasons) who shared the same surname.

Land Registry records indicate that in 2020, ownership of the property was transferred to SM in her maiden name.

McDonagh had co-owned another property, also in Castleknock, with SM from 1995 till it was sold to a third party in 2013.

Both of the co-owned Castleknock properties were registered in the name of “Brendan McDonagh”.

McDonagh declined to comment.
